A new Covid variant, known as XEC, is spreading rapidly according to health experts. The variant, first identified in Germany, has now made its way across Europe and is predicted to become the dominant strain in the USA. Dr Eric Topol, director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute in California, has warned that XEC is just beginning to spread globally. This variant, a recombination of the KS.1.1 and KP.3.3 strains, is being closely monitored by health authorities.
Dr Elizabeth Hudson, regional chief of infectious diseases for Kaiser Permanente Southern California, has emphasised the need for vigilance as more information about XEC is collected. The variant has been detected in 15 countries across three continents after originating in Berlin in June. Data expert Mike Honey from Melbourne has highlighted XEC as a potential threat, outcompeting other strains in various countries like the Netherlands, Spain, Denmark, and Israel.
In the UK, Covid cases have seen a 4.3% increase week on week, with 102 deaths reported in England in the week to August 30. Hospital admissions due to Covid during the same period numbered 1,465 patients. The NHS has listed symptoms of the latest Covid variant, including a high temperature, cough, loss of smell or taste, fatigue, body aches, headache, sore throat, and gastrointestinal issues. It is important to note that these symptoms may overlap with other common illnesses.
As the world faces the emergence of new Covid variants, health authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and follow recommended safety measures to prevent further spread of the virus. Stay informed and practice precautions to protect yourself and others during this ongoing health crisis.
