‘GP mistook symptoms for menopause and left me crawling to the toilet’

A woman in Wales, Janet Johnston-Oger, shared her harrowing experience of being bed-bound and unable to perform basic tasks due to long Covid. Janet, a 50-year-old translator from Northern Ireland now residing in Rennes, France, used to lead an active lifestyle but was severely impacted by the illness. Previously enjoying swimming, brisk walks, and social activities, Janet found herself struggling with debilitating symptoms post-Covid.

After contracting the virus in June 2021, Janet faced severe effects, including night sweats, insomnia, anxiety, and palpitations. As new symptoms like migraines, nausea, and extreme exhaustion emerged, Janet sought medical help, only to be dismissed by her GP who attributed the symptoms to menopause. Despite seeking assistance regularly and undergoing various tests, Janet’s condition deteriorated.

It wasn’t until May 15, 2023, that a doctor recognised Janet’s long Covid after she struggled to even reach the bathroom. Referred to a long Covid clinic in Rennes, Janet began a slow recovery journey. Managing her symptoms with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and water therapy, Janet gradually saw improvements. She stressed the importance of pacing activities and energy management to reduce inflammation and alleviate symptoms.

Janet’s story sheds light on the challenges faced by long Covid sufferers and the critical need for awareness and support for those battling the condition. Despite the slow progress, Janet remains hopeful and determined to regain her health and resume a normal life. Her resilience and perseverance serve as an inspiration to others navigating their recovery from long Covid.
