Disgraced former BBC presenter Huw Edwards expressed deep regret and apologised for his involvement in possessing indecent images of children as young as seven. Edwards, who appeared in court to face sentencing after admitting to three charges of making indecent images of children, acknowledged his wrongdoing regarding the disturbing images found on his phone between December 2020 and August 2021.
The court heard that these indecent images were sent to Edwards by a 25-year-old convicted paedophile named Alex Williams. It was revealed that Edwards, a father of five, had engaged in online chats with Williams on WhatsApp, where Williams sent him a total of 377 images, with 41 of them being indecent images of children. One specific image found on Edwards’ phone depicted a child aged between seven and nine.
During his sentencing hearing, Edwards’s barrister conveyed that the former broadcaster acknowledged the betrayal of trust and faith he caused and expressed deep sorrow for the harm inflicted on the individuals featured in the indecent images. The defence emphasised that Edwards, who has not worked since leaving the BBC, had previously maintained a good reputation that he has now lost in a very public manner.
It was mentioned in court that Williams had targeted Edwards on Instagram at a time when Edwards was perceived as vulnerable. While Edwards attempted to resist the images sent to him by Williams, he ultimately received and possessed them. Shocking details emerged during the hearing, including that Edwards had sent Williams a significant amount of money, albeit not explicitly in exchange for indecent images.
The prosecutor outlined how Williams sent Edwards a series of indecent images and videos of children, including some involving children as young as seven to nine engaging in disturbing acts. Despite Edwards’ responses to Williams at times indicating reluctance or disapproval, he did not outright reject the imagery. Williams was later convicted on multiple offences related to sharing indecent images. Overall, the charges against Edwards cover a period spanning from December 2020 to August 2021.
