Dr. Federica Amati, a nutritionist at Zoe, highlighted that certain UPFs can be part of a balanced diet. For instance, supermarket baked beans, which may contain modified starches and fructose syrups, can offer beneficial nutrients like fibre and protein when chosen with fewer additives. Similarly, tomato-based sauces can provide antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins, although it’s essential to watch out for added sugar and salt levels in different brands.
Soups, another common processed food, can vary in quality, with fresh options sometimes containing added salt. Peanut butter, typically considered a healthier choice, offers protein and healthy fats, but it’s crucial to check for any additional oils or fats like palm oil. Whole-grain cereals, fruit yoghurts, wholemeal bread, and fat-free popcorn are other surprising UPFs that can be included in a diet with their nutrient profiles in mind.
The study hinted at the protective benefits of yoghurts against heart issues, especially fermented types like Greek yoghurts with probiotic bases. When choosing wholemeal bread over white options, consumers gain fibre, vitamins, and protein without some of the additives found in processed versions. Lastly, fat-free popcorn emerges as a guilt-free, satisfying snack with its low-calorie and high-fibre content, according to Dr. Amati’s insights.
Even though caution should be exercised in consuming UPFs, these exceptions offer a nuanced perspective on including processed foods in a healthy diet. By being mindful of the ingredients and nutritional content, individuals can make informed choices about incorporating certain UPFs into their daily meals.
