Computer-generated footage has been unveiled, showcasing the design of Cardiff’s first trams in generations. The images, produced by the Cardiff-based architectural firm The Urbanists, offer a glimpse of what the city’s tram system might look like, marking a significant transportation development since the mid-20th century.
The tram route, part of the £100 million Cardiff Crossrail project, will connect Cardiff Central railway station with Cardiff Bay, providing a crucial link between these two key areas. The project, a collaborative effort between Cardiff Council and Transport for Wales (TfW), aims to enhance public transportation in the city.
In the video, the tram line is depicted running through Callaghan Square before reaching Cardiff Central railway station. A new two-platform station will be constructed in the southern car park of Cardiff Central to facilitate tram operations, while further improvements include enhanced pedestrian walkways and segregated cycle lanes in Callaghan Square.
Additionally, plans include the construction of a third platform at Cardiff Bay railway station, expanding the infrastructure as part of the ongoing South Wales Metro initiative. Public input is being sought through a 6-week consultation period from September 16 to October 27, 2024, allowing stakeholders to contribute their views on the proposed tramway.
The release of the footage marks a significant milestone in Cardiff’s urban development, signalling a modernisation of the city’s public transport network.
