Millions of individuals will be eligible to receive a NHS jab during Autumn 2024 as a new Covid-19 variant, XEC, has been identified in the UK. Experts have reported that the XEC variant is emerging and is expected to become the dominant strain in the coming winter. Initially detected in Germany in June, XEC has since spread to various countries including the UK and the USA.
Professor Francois Balloux, from the Genetics Institute at University College London, stated that XEC possesses a slight transmission advantage compared to other recent Covid variants. However, vaccines are still anticipated to provide effective protection against severe cases. Eric Topol, Director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, warned that while XEC is gaining ground, vaccines are crucial in combatting the virus.
The UK Health Security Agency advises that although a specific vaccine targeting XEC has not been released yet, individuals eligible for the NHS booster jab should take advantage of the opportunity. As the autumn approaches, the effectiveness of earlier Covid-19 vaccinations may diminish, making the booster shot vital for vulnerable populations. Data from the UKHSA shows that individuals who received a vaccine last autumn were significantly less likely to be hospitalized due to Covid-19.
Despite a reduction in the overall number of people eligible for the Covid-19 vaccine since the pandemic’s onset, certain key groups still qualify. These include adults aged 65 and over, residents in care homes, individuals in clinical risk groups, frontline NHS and social care workers, and those in care homes for older people. The eligibility criteria are consistent across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
In addition to the standard eligible groups, individuals with weakened immune systems (immunosuppressed) are encouraged to review specific criteria outlined in the Green Book published by the UKHSA. Patients such as transplant recipients, those on immunosuppressive therapy, or individuals with certain medical conditions may also qualify for the autumn vaccination.
NHS England will release detailed information on how eligible individuals can access the autumn Covid-19 vaccine in due course. With Covid-19 spreading more easily during winter, receiving the vaccine this autumn is crucial in providing protection against severe illness over the colder months.
