Eluned Morgan, the First Minister of Wales, has outlined her priorities for the country. Taking on the role in August without a leadership contest, she had not previously published policies. Over the summer, she travelled across Wales to listen to people’s concerns before appointing a new cabinet. Addressing the Senedd, she emphasised the importance of listening to all voices in setting governmental priorities.
Morgan identified four key areas of focus for her administration. These include improving healthcare by reducing NHS waiting times, enhancing mental health services, and addressing women’s health needs. She also aims to create green jobs and promote economic growth by accelerating planning decisions. Additionally, she plans to provide opportunities for every family through better education standards, increased social housing, and community connectivity initiatives.
Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Morgan stressed that prioritisation is crucial given the diverse issues facing Wales. She highlighted the importance of transformation in key sectors such as healthcare, education, and transportation. The First Minister also announced the appointment of a delivery minister to monitor progress and ensure accountability within the cabinet.
Following Morgan’s statement, opposition leader Andrew RT Davies raised concerns about aspects not covered in her priorities, such as education and agriculture. Plaid Cymru’s Rhun ap Iorwerth criticised the delay in appointing the cabinet and questioned the depth of Morgan’s proposals. Despite the criticism, Morgan defended her government’s approach and commitment to addressing the key concerns raised by the people of Wales.
As the Welsh government begins implementing its agenda, the focus remains on delivering tangible improvements in healthcare, job creation, education, and infrastructure. With challenges ahead, Morgan’s leadership will be tested in fulfilling the promises made to the people of Wales.
