The cost of chocolate bars has surged, with some prices doubling in just three months, according to a report by Wales Online. The price hikes affect popular brands such as Twix, Milk Tray, and various multipack and own-brand offerings. Data from the latest Which? inflation tracker revealed that chocolate prices rose by 11% in the year leading up to August, significantly outpacing the overall supermarket food and drink price increase of 2.7% during the same period.
The spike in chocolate prices can be attributed to the escalating cocoa prices, driven by poor harvests in West Africa due to unusual weather conditions. Specific examples of price increases highlighted in the report include Sainsbury’s No Added Sugar Milk Chocolate, which almost doubled from an average of 95p to £1.84. Branded products like Prestat Chocolates & Truffles Assortment and Asda’s Moo Free Dairy Free & Vegan Original Chocolate Bar saw price hikes of 88% and 60%, respectively.
Furthermore, other grocery items witnessed significant price rises, with Sainsbury’s Fat Free Natural Yoghurt doubling in price and Aldi’s Acti Leaf Unsweetened UHT Soya Drink increasing by 70%. Overall, food and drink prices saw a 16.6% surge in the three months leading up to August 2024 compared to the same period two years earlier, posing challenges for households trying to afford essential items.
Which? Retail editor Ele Clark advised consumers to compare prices per gram across different retailers and brands to ensure they are getting the best value for their money, particularly with Halloween approaching. Responding to the report, supermarkets like Asda, Morrisons, and Sainsbury’s emphasized their commitment to providing competitive prices and value for customers, offering various loyalty schemes and discounts to help mitigate the impact of rising food costs.
The significant price hikes in the chocolate sector highlight the ongoing struggles faced by consumers dealing with inflation in everyday essentials. As shoppers navigate these challenges, it becomes increasingly important to compare prices, explore alternative options, and make informed purchasing decisions to manage their budgets effectively.
