A mother, Rhiannon Hodgson, recounted her harrowing experience of facing two real-life pregnancy nightmares as she found herself back in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Singleton Hospital in Swansea, Wales. The first ordeal began in June 2021 when her son, Xavier, was born prematurely at 3lb 8oz and spent 21 days in the NICU due to low heart rate. After a difficult journey, Xavier was able to come home on June 29, 2021, weighing 4lb 1oz.
Tragically, a year later, Rhiannon faced a similar crisis when her second son, Odin, arrived eight weeks early in February 2023, weighing just 3lb 14oz. Odin also required NICU care for 18 days to gain weight before going home. Rhiannon expressed her unexpected return to the unit twice and shared her gratitude towards the NICU staff, especially Nurse Leigh Bainbridge, for their unwavering support during both challenging times.
Despite the overwhelming challenges, Rhiannon, her husband Rhys, and their family managed to raise funds for the Swansea Bay Health Charity as a token of appreciation for the NICU’s exceptional care. Matron neonatal services, Helen James, commended the family’s generosity and assured that the donation would aid in supporting families on the neonatal unit. Both Xavier and Odin are progressing well, thanks to the dedicated care at Singleton Hospital’s NICU.
