Transport for Wales has issued an apology following a series of incidents that led to significant disruptions in train services. The events, which included a man on the railway tracks, missiles being thrown at a train, and a trespasser on the tracks, caused delays and cancellations across the Welsh network.
The disruptions began with deliberate damage to signalling cables near Abergavenny, affecting around 22 services. This was followed by incidents on routes to Manchester and Holyhead, leading to terminations at Wilmslow and Shrewsbury respectively. In the afternoon, further disruptions occurred, including a person on the tracks at Hengoed, missiles thrown near Llanbradach, and a trespasser between Cardiff and Newport.
The trespasser’s actions caused significant delays as trains had to catch up and some services were cancelled to minimize disruptions. These incidents resulted in only 9% of services running on time in the evening peak, prompting Transport for Wales to offer apologies to affected customers.
The impact of these incidents continued well into the evening, highlighting the challenges faced by the transport network. Transport for Wales emphasised the need for passenger safety and operational efficiency amidst such disruptions. The organisation reassured customers of ongoing efforts to improve services and minimise future disruptions.
