In a groundbreaking operation, conjoined twin baby girls have been successfully separated after being born fused at the head. Minal and Mirha, originally from Pakistan, underwent a 14-hour procedure at Ankara Bilkent City Hospital. The surgery, led by Professor Noor ul Owase Jeelani from London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital, was particularly risky as the twins were joined at the front of their heads, sharing vital blood vessels and brain tissue.
The procedure, carried out in two stages over three months, was a major milestone in the medical field. Virtual reality played a significant role in planning and rehearsing the surgery. Using Mixed Reality technology combining 3D images, medical scans, and real-world simulations, the surgical team ensured precision and success in separating the twins.
Minal and Mirha are currently still in the Turkish hospital where the surgery took place, but they are expected to make a full recovery. Professor Jeelani, who founded the charity Gemini Untwined, expressed confidence in the twins’ recovery and anticipated their return home in a few weeks. He emphasised the importance of providing the girls with a new future where they can live independently and enjoy their childhood.
This successful separation marks the 8th involving brain connection undertaken by the charity, showcasing Professor Jeelani’s expertise in the field. He credited the NHS and UCL for their contributions to the surgery, highlighting the collaborative effort and knowledge-sharing that benefitted the twins.
