Swansea Aims to Become Skateboarding Capital of Wales
Swansea is gearing up to become the skateboarding capital of Wales as the council’s cabinet has recently approved doubling the existing pot of £1 million for new skate parks and pump tracks, which are popular looping circuits for cyclists with jumps and banked turns. Councillor Robert Francis-Davies, the cabinet member for investment, regeneration, events, and tourism, shared that consultants hired by the council estimated a network of new schemes would cost about £2.7 million.
Residents of Swansea can look forward to having access to new skate parks or pump tracks within a two-mile radius of their homes, according to Cllr Francis-Davies. While the specific locations of the upcoming facilities have not been disclosed yet, excitement is building among locals, with Cllr Cyril Anderson expressing his enthusiasm for a new skate park coming to his Townhill ward.
The council’s initial allocation of £1 million for skate parks and pump tracks was further supported with an additional £1 million authorised at the recent cabinet meeting, aligning with Cllr Francis-Davies’ ambition to establish Swansea as the skateboarding and small-wheeled capital of Wales. This increased investment is a significant step towards ensuring easy access to skateboarding and cycling opportunities for residents of all ages across the city.
With outdoor and indoor skate facilities already present in Swansea, including the one developed by Mumbles Community Council near the West Cross promenade, the new development plans are set to enhance the city’s recreational offerings further. Notable figures like skateboarder Mathew Pritchard have also contributed to raising awareness and funds for skateboarding initiatives in Swansea.
Consultants from Curve Studio, engaged by Swansea Council to design the skate facilities, highlighted the importance of creating a network of high-quality wheeled sport facilities throughout Swansea. Their masterplan aims to cater to different skill levels and interests, ultimately inspiring more people to engage in skating and riding activities in the community.
Apart from the skate park developments, the council has dedicated funds from a budget surplus towards various capital projects, including road resurfacing, kerb installations, and park path upgrades. This commitment reflects the council’s proactive approach to enhancing local amenities and infrastructure, with Cllr Francis-Davies emphasising the importance of funding for road maintenance to meet desired standards.
