Baby Evelyn, born at Leeds General Infirmary, tragically met her untimely end when her mother unintentionally fell asleep while breastfeeding her in bed. The incident occurred merely a day after Evelyn’s birth on September 26, 2023, following a strenuous labour. Despite the mother’s extreme fatigue due to minimal sleep in the days leading up to the birth, she, along with her parents, was sent home only four hours post-delivery. Early the following day, Evelyn, who was unsettled, was brought into her mother’s bed around 1.45 am for breastfeeding. Unfortunately, the mother fell asleep during the feeding, and at around 4 am, Evelyn was discovered unresponsive under her mother’s breast. Despite immediate emergency intervention, little Evelyn could not be revived and was declared deceased at 7.50 am at Leeds General Infirmary, where she was born.
Although Evelyn’s cause of death was noted as “unascertained,” the coroner indicated that accidental suffocation by a sleeping adult was likely the reason for her demise. Senior coroner Kevin McLoughlin expressed his belief that Evelyn’s death could have been prevented if she and her mother had not been discharged prematurely from the hospital after the birth. He issued a caution, highlighting the potential for future tragedies unless prompt action was taken by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. In his report to the Trust, Mr McLoughlin raised various concerns, stressing the immediate need for preventive measures to avoid similar incidents and stating, “In my opinion, action should be taken to prevent future deaths and I believe your organisation have the power to take such action.” The Trust has been granted 56 days to respond to the coroner’s report, outlining actions already implemented or planned for execution.
