An outdoor education base in Carmarthenshire is due to close next year and be replaced by affordable housing. Numerous young people have had a taste of adventure at Pendine Outdoor Education Centre over the years, but the Carmarthenshire Council-run facility is said to be past its best. This, coupled with significant demand for housing, persuaded council leaders to look at different options.
The authority said alternative outdoor accommodation would be built along the coast at Pembrey Country Park. Cllr Hazel Evans, cabinet member for regeneration, leisure, culture, and tourism, highlighted the rising need for affordable housing and the opportunity presented by the closure of the outdoor education centre in October 2025. The plan is to develop 25 affordable housing units that could cater to general and specialist use on the site.
The council remains committed to providing outdoor education experiences for young people. The value of the Pendine centre will be assessed independently, and the proceeds will be reinvested in Pembrey Country Park to enhance facilities. This includes the addition of camping and glamping pods for educational use during term-time and public access during holidays, with the aim to increase usage, income, and sustainability at the park.
Pendine Outdoor Education Centre, located near Pendine’s famous beach where land speed records were set and broken over the years, has hosted various groups including Scouts, Guides, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award participants, and school groups. Its closure next autumn has surprised some residents in the village, with concerns about housing pressure and affordability.
The proposed affordable housing at the outdoor centre site has received mixed reactions from residents, with some highlighting the potential benefits for the community. Carmarthenshire Council’s recent investments in Pendine, including a new beach-side hostel, restaurant, museum, and playground, reflect ongoing efforts to enhance the area.
