NHS warns ‘never use’ common item or risk permanent hearing loss

The NHS has issued a stark warning to the public, advising against the use of a common item to prevent the risk of permanent hearing loss. Ear experts caution that people should never insert objects like cotton buds into their ears, even if they believe it may clear blockages. The NHS website emphasises the potential for damaging hearing, with irreversible consequences. In addition, individuals are urged to avoid listening to music at high volume levels, as it should only be loud enough for comfortable hearing.

Health professionals from Ear View highlight the misconception that cotton buds are gentle and harmless. They caution that inserting them into the ears can lead to damage of the eardrums and result in more serious issues, such as a perforated eardrum, tinnitus, or hearing loss. Attempting to clean earwax from the inner ear canal can exacerbate the problem rather than solve it. Instead, experts recommend a gentle ear wash with warm water during showers to soften earwax for easier removal.

Experts from Ear View also suggest applying a few drops of preferred oil to the ear using an ear dropper for absorption. This method offers a safer alternative to using cotton buds, which risk pushing earwax further into the ear canal, potentially causing hearing loss, dizziness, infections, earache, or vertigo. By adopting these alternative practices, individuals can maintain healthy ear hygiene and mitigate the risks associated with improper ear cleaning methods.
