A serial burglar broke into the home of a renowned chef in Cardiff who discovered his front door open and hundreds of pounds missing. Shaun Powell, 48, burgled Lee Skeet’s home in Pontcanna on August 12 while the chef was asleep upstairs. Upon realising the theft, Skeet pursued Powell into a neighbour’s garden and assisted in detaining him until the police arrived.
During a sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court, details emerged that Powell had 39 previous convictions, some of which were for burglaries. In a victim personal statement, Skeet expressed the impact of the incident, stating that it was life-changing, especially considering his three young children who also reside in the house. The chef highlighted the potential danger posed to his family by the burglar’s actions.
The court heard Powell’s defence counsel describe him as a troubled individual battling addiction, which contributed to his criminal behaviour. Despite expressing remorse in court, Powell was sentenced to 876 days in prison, with the requirement to serve half the sentence in custody before being released on licence.
