A rogue builder in Porthcawl, Wales, named Paul Atkinson, has been found guilty of conning his customers out of nearly £150,000 after taking deposits but failing to complete any work. Atkinson’s actions left his clients in financial distress, with one even contemplating suicide. The 45-year-old builder pocketed the funds sent to him by customers who had hired him to construct extensions and orangeries on their properties.
Operating under various company names including Protecta Home Improvements and Protecta Design and Build Ltd, Atkinson duped customers by making promises of quality work and timely communication. However, after receiving deposits, he became difficult to reach, ignored refund requests, and even issued subtle threats to dissatisfied customers who posted negative reviews online.
During a sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court, it was revealed that Atkinson presented himself as professional and knowledgeable initially, but his work was subpar. Customers had to bear additional costs to rectify the poor workmanship or incomplete projects. Atkinson continued to take deposits even after his company went into liquidation, failing to inform clients of the situation.
One victim stated, “This has left us financially and emotionally drained. I felt upset and stupid for falling for a conman’s tricks, and my mental health has been affected.” Another customer described the stress and strain caused by Atkinson’s actions, leading to depression and thoughts of self-harm. Families were left struggling financially and emotionally, with one mother having to carry her son in a wheelchair due to the incomplete work in her garden.
Atkinson pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including engaging in commercial practices, making false representations, and intending to defraud creditors. In court, it was revealed that he diverted company funds for personal use, including foreign holidays and golf trips. The judge sentenced Atkinson to 43 months in prison, acknowledging the significant impact his actions had on the victims.
