Tata Steel is constructing a significant new blast furnace in India, even as it prepares to close down its furnace in Port Talbot. These job cuts are part of an agreement that includes the construction of a new plant to recycle old steel. The UK Government recently finalised a deal to provide Tata with £500 million towards this initiative, with Tata contributing the remaining £750 million of the £1.25 billion plan.

The first of Port Talbot’s two blast furnaces closed in July, with the second set to cease operations soon, marking the end of primary steel production in Port Talbot. Moving forward, the site is expected to import steel until at least late 2027 when its electric arc furnace is projected to be fully operational.
