After months of anticipation, Cardiff Council is urging the Welsh Government to make a final decision on the proposed Cardiff Parkway railway station and business park development. Councillor Chris Weaver, the cabinet member for finance, emphasized the importance of receiving a decision regarding the project, which has been in limbo since the Welsh Government announced its intention to review the development back in April. The proposed site, located south of St Mellons Business Park, has the potential to be a significant asset to the east of the city, with interest from companies like Rolls-Royce in setting up offices there.
However, the site’s status as part of the Rumney and Peterstone site of special scientific interest (SSSI) has raised concerns about the potential impact on biodiversity and habitats in the area. Cllr Weaver highlighted the benefits of the project, stating that a new railway station in the east of the city would bring improved transport options, economic growth, and overall positive impacts to Cardiff.
Cardiff Parkway was initially approved by the Cardiff Council in April 2022, but the Welsh Government intervened to review the project due to its national significance. Following a planning hearing in July 2023 and a subsequent report submitted to Welsh ministers in September 2023, changes in Welsh planning policy necessitated a second hearing in January 2024. The Welsh Government set a target decision date for April 26, 2024, which has since passed.
In response to queries about the decision timeline, a Welsh Government spokesman stated that the application is actively under consideration, with a decision to be communicated in due course. The Cardiff Council remains optimistic about the potential of the Cardiff Parkway project and its benefits for the city, emphasizing the need for a conclusive decision from the Welsh Government to move the development forward.
