A man was found in a hotel bed with a 15-year-old girl he had met on a messaging app, according to a court hearing at Swansea Crown Court. The teenager had travelled over 150 miles from her home to spend time with the defendant. The court was informed that the girl initially misrepresented herself as being 16 and even feigned her identity as her mother in text conversations with the defendant. However, just before the arranged trip to Wales, she disclosed her true age.
The defendant’s barrister claimed that the teenage girl had deceived his 24-year-old client. Robin Rouch, the prosecutor, detailed that the man and the girl connected on Snapchat in October 2023, resulting in an “online relationship” developing between them. The court heard that the girl misled the defendant about her age, and Bendle believed the information provided to him. Additionally, exchanges revealed that the girl imitated her mother in messages, discussing the defendant’s relationship with her “daughter” and the potential of his visit.
On October 30, the girl informed her mother that she was visiting friends in Wales, caught a train to Swansea, and met the defendant at a Premier Inn. Following a couple of days, the teenager’s mother discovered her daughter’s actual whereabouts and reported her missing. Subsequent police inquiries led to the Premier Inn in Swansea, where at 2 am, Bendle and the teenager were discovered in bed together by officers. Bendle had two photos on his phone depicting him holding the teenager’s exposed breasts.
During questioning, Bendle elected to remain silent. He had previously pleaded guilty to inappropriate behaviour with a child – touching the teenager’s breasts – and possessing indecent images. Despite no prior convictions, Bendle was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years. He was also mandated to partake in rehabilitation and complete 100 hours of unpaid community work. Moreover, he will be registered as a sex offender for a decade.
Recorder Aidan Eardley KC noted that Bendle had been misled about the girl’s age and parental approval for the visit. Despite learning the truth, Bendle continued with the travel and hotel arrangements. The court recognised Bendle’s lack of criminal history, genuine contrition, and circumstances outlined in the pre-sentence report. The recorder decided against imposing a sexual harm prevention order, citing insufficient grounds presented by the prosecution.
