**Major Improvement Work to Start on Welsh Promenade**

Llandudno’s renowned promenade is set for major renovations. While the North Shore fell short of obtaining additional millions to extend the beach by 600 metres, improvements to flood defence are being backed by the Welsh Government. Conwy County Borough Council has successfully secured a £5.2 million grant from the Welsh Government to enhance both the north and west shores.
The funding will also contribute to an enhanced “set-back wall”, designed to augment the existing Standard of Protection (SoP) against flooding. Having completed works on the West Shore, contractors are now advancing towards the town’s primary waterfront. Construction works are expected to start this week, around the paddling pool area. Consequently, some areas near the RNLI up to Ffynnon Sadwrn Lane will face closures including the seafront footpath and car parking to facilitate the works.
The timeline for these upgrades indicate a completion date before Easter 2025, reports North Wales Live. The council has issued an apology for any disruptions caused during this time, stating: “We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience while we carry out this essential work.” The cost for opting for a combination of sand augmentation and groynes over a 600m stretch on North Shore would incur an additional £12.54 million.
Neither Welsh Government cash or new UK Government levelling-up funds – the replacement for European funding – have been on offer to cover that extra cost.
