Dog trainer shares the ‘correct’ and ‘incorrect’ way to show your pet affection

A dog trainer has shared insights on how to correctly show affection to pets, pointing out common signs that indicate discomfort rather than happiness. Dogs are valued members of households in the UK, and ensuring their wellbeing is a priority for many owners. However, it can be easy to misinterpret subtle cues from dogs, mistaking signs of distress for contentment.

The dog trainer, known as The Tired Pooch, recently posted on social media about reading a dog’s body language during interactions to understand their feelings better. The post included a demonstration with a German Shepherd named Ripley, showing indicators of stress and unease in response to certain actions.

For example, when leaned into and kissed on the muzzle, Ripley displayed stress signs like yawning and lip licking. Even when the dog appeared to reciprocate affection by licking the owner’s face, it was actually a gesture of asking for personal space. The trainer highlighted these behaviours to help dog owners recognise when their pets might be uncomfortable.

Throughout the demonstration, Ripley exhibited various body language cues, such as putting her ears back, giving ‘whale eye’, and eventually moving away to indicate her discomfort. The trainer emphasised the importance of understanding these signals to ensure a positive interaction with dogs.

Viewers praised the informative session, with many expressing gratitude for the valuable insights provided by The Tired Pooch. Understanding and responding to a dog’s body language can enhance the bond between owners and their furry companions, creating a more positive and respectful relationship based on mutual understanding and care.
