Fund set up for dad who died as he flew back to UK with his children

A fundraising initiative has been established for a father who tragically passed away while flying back to the UK with his children. Chris Neill was accompanied by his sons Reece, 19, and Archie, 8, on a Jet2 flight from Bourgas, Bulgaria, bound for Liverpool John Lennon Airport on September 16. During the journey, Chris fell ill, leading to a severe heart attack and his subsequent death. The flight was diverted to Cologne, Germany, where the 40-year-old father was pronounced dead after collapsing as he disembarked the plane. To assist in repatriating Chris and arranging his funeral, his parents, Mal and Lesley, are seeking financial support, as Chris’s travel insurance had lapsed. A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise the necessary £12,000 to £15,000 required for the process, with £4,630 already gathered.

A heartfelt plea on the fundraising page from the family states, “Please help bring Chris home for his parents and kid’s sake. Thank you from all the family and friends of Chris.” Expressing condolences, a Jet2.com spokesperson shared, “We can confirm that flight LS3214 from Bourgas to Liverpool John Lennon diverted to Cologne on Monday 16th September, due to a customer requiring medical assistance. Regrettably, we can confirm that the customer sadly passed away.” The Liverpool John Lennon Airport also offered condolences, stating, “Our thoughts at this sad time are with the passenger’s family and friends, to whom we send our deepest condolences.”

News of the tragic incident has spurred community support, with contributions and well-wishes pouring in towards the fundraising efforts. The family remains appreciative of the assistance received during this emotionally challenging period. The generosity and compassion shown by donors have been instrumental in helping the Neill family navigate this unexpected loss. The memory of Chris Neill will undoubtedly be cherished by those who knew and loved him, as they work towards honouring his legacy and providing him with a dignified farewell. The resilience and unity exhibited by supporters further exemplify the power of community in times of adversity.
