The victim, who was described as having “had some difficulties in the past,” was subjected to two separate sexual assaults by Bernard. During the assaults, Bernard used physical force to overpower the woman, including putting her in a headlock and forcefully making her perform sexual acts against her will.
Prosecutor Andrew Davies detailed how Bernard grabbed the victim around the throat in a terrifying manner before committing further sexual acts without her consent. Despite the victim’s clear lack of willingness to engage in the sexual activities, Bernard showed no regard for her feelings. Following the incidents, the woman disclosed what had happened, prompting police involvement.
During the trial, evidence of text messages exchanged between Bernard and the victim contradicted his initial statement claiming not to know her. Hutchinson Bernard, of Bideford Road, Llanrumney, was subsequently found guilty of two counts of rape and intentional strangulation. He was remanded in custody until his sentencing hearing scheduled for November 1 by Judge Eugene Egan.
