A heartfelt tribute has been paid to the hero dogs that have left the prison service this year. More than 800 dogs work in UK prisons, supporting their handlers and helping to maintain safety and security within the facilities. These dedicated canines are trained to detect illicit items and substances, as well as to defuse tense situations. When the time for retirement arrives, these loyal companions transition from their professional duties to a well-deserved life of relaxation and comfort with their families.
Every year, HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) acknowledges the significant contributions of both the dog handlers and their canine partners. Richard Vince CBE, Executive Director for the Directorate of Security, expressed his pride in the exceptional standards upheld by the dog sections and applauded the professionalism and dedication demonstrated by the handlers and their dogs.

Homer, Diesel, Tess, Ace, Alfie, Edward, Chaz, Oscar, Sky, Khan, Zelda, Whisper, Jess, Loki, Lola, and Kai have all served faithfully in various capacities within the prison system. From successful finds to memorable triumphs, each dog has left a lasting impact on their handlers and colleagues.
These loyal and hardworking animals have earned a peaceful retirement after years of invaluable service. Whether enjoying leisurely days lounging on the sofa or embarking on outdoor adventures, these retired dogs are now cherished members of their families, basking in the love and attention they so richly deserve.
