Electric vehicle (EV) owners in the UK will face new road tax charges starting in 2025, marking a significant change to the current exemption they enjoy. Over one million motorists have been informed of the upcoming Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) requirement, which will take effect from April next year. This development means that EV drivers will need to pay an annual road tax, ending their previous tax-free status.
The decision by the government to introduce road tax for EV owners is aimed at boosting tax revenue, especially as the number of electric cars on UK roads continues to rise. Most electric car drivers are expected to pay the standard annual rate of £190. However, owners of higher-end electric models will face an additional £410 supplement charge, as reported by Birmingham Live.
The RAC has highlighted the implications of these changes, emphasizing that electric vehicles currently benefit from free road tax but will transition to paying for it starting April 1, 2025. Moreover, EV owners with cars priced over £40,000 will be subject to the expensive car tax supplement, which is currently set at £410 per year. This adjustment means that those driving luxury electric vehicles may end up paying up to £600 annually for road tax.
The new VED rules will impact hundreds of thousands of electric vehicle owners in the UK, affecting their overall running costs. For zero-emission cars registered from April 1, 2025, the first-year VED rate will be £10 for vehicles emitting 1 to 50g/km of CO2. Subsequently, these cars will move to the standard rate, currently set at £190 per year from the second year onwards. The exemption for the expensive car supplement for electric vehicles is expected to end in 2025.
These changes signal a significant shift for EV owners who have enjoyed tax benefits thus far. As the UK government aims to align electric car drivers with other motorists in terms of taxation, these adjustments will play a key role in shaping the future of road tax charges for electric vehicles in the country.
