The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has made a significant announcement regarding a major change to the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) benefit, which is worth £5,000 and is set to affect approximately 325,000 individuals currently receiving the benefit. Previously, there have been significant delays in the assessment process for individuals seeking PIP benefits. However, with the new changes introduced by the government, these delays are expected to be reduced significantly.
In a shift from the traditional method of assessments conducted by healthcare professionals, the responsibility of determining outcomes for PIP applications will now be placed on Jobcentre superiors. This change is part of an effort to address the increasing backlog of reviews and assessment requirements. To manage the growing workload, the DWP has initiated a recruitment campaign for case managers.
The modifications in the assessment procedures for PIP claims are in line with the changes being made by the DWP in the organisation of its regional contracts for benefit evaluations. The DWP has acknowledged that it may take some time for new contractors to adapt to the assessment demands, especially with the rise in claims related to long-standing illnesses and ailments.
Stephen Timms, the Minister for social security and disability, stated, “We continue to prioritise new claims to PIP to ensure claims are put into payment as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, this means many customers are waiting longer than expected for their review to be undertaken.” Currently, around 3.4 million individuals are receiving financial support through PIP, with payments made monthly at either the standard rate of £290 or the enhanced rate of £434.
Moreover, customers with the most severe conditions, receiving the highest level of support, will now receive an ongoing PIP award that requires only a light-touch review every 10 years. These changes aim to streamline the assessment process and ensure timely support for those in need of PIP benefits.
