A Welsh fencing firm in rural Gwynedd, Glasfryn Fencing, is set to close down, leading to the loss of nine jobs. The sustainable forestry company, founded 37 years ago, will cease trading at the end of the month. The closure decision was made by the Glasfryn estate trustees after discussions with the Williams-Ellis family, who founded the business. Arwel Roberts, the 72-year-old site manager who has been with the enterprise since its inception, expressed sadness about the closure. All employees, including one with 34 years of service, have been informed of the closure, causing a disruption in northwest Wales due to cancelled orders.
Glasfryn Fencing, known for its high-quality products like firewood, was established by Roger Williams-Ellis, nephew of Portmeirion architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. The company was a key supplier of firewood and had a reputation for producing long-lasting fencing products. However, with the closure, ongoing woodland renewal efforts that involved orders for approximately 8,500 trees ready for planting have been impacted as well.
Mr Roberts, reflecting on the early days of the company, highlighted the focus on producing quality products and the commitment to complete control over the manufacturing process. As the business grew, it expanded its operations and invested in modern facilities to enhance production efficiency. Glasfryn Fencing explored diverse product lines, from fence posts and gates to flagpoles and picnic tables, showcasing innovation in utilising timber resources.
The closure of Glasfryn Fencing marks the end of an era for the company and the community it served. The staff, many of whom have decades of experience and skill in the sawmill industry, now face uncertain futures after the closure. Local customers, businesses, and councils that relied on the company’s products are also affected by the shutdown. The legacy of Glasfryn Fencing, which played a role in the region’s forestry and timber economy for decades, will be remembered by those who valued its craftsmanship and quality products.
