Aldi boss, Giles Hurley, has reached out to all Aldi customers through an email following the recent BBC Panorama investigation. The program delved into supermarket secrets, specifically examining price-match and comparison claims. The investigation revealed discrepancies in the main ingredients of various products price-matched to Aldi. For instance, items like chicken nuggets, blackcurrant squash, and chicken kievs were found to have lower quantities of their primary ingredients compared to their Aldi counterparts.
BBC Panorama’s study in August found that Tesco’s chicken nuggets contained 39% chicken, whereas Aldi’s version had 60% chicken. Similarly, Tesco’s chili con carne had 15% beef compared to Aldi’s 27%. Although twelve Tesco products were found to have more of the main ingredient, the investigation raised concerns about the accuracy of Tesco’s price-match claims.
Hurley’s message to Aldi customers acknowledged the BBC Panorama findings and highlighted the importance of maintaining quality while offering competitive prices. He reassured customers that at Aldi, quality is not compromised for affordability. Hurley expressed gratitude to customers for their loyalty and reiterated Aldi’s commitment to providing both value and quality products. He welcomed customers back to Aldi stores, emphasising their dedication to delivering a superior shopping experience.
The investigation shed light on the discrepancies in some supermarket price-match schemes and underscored Aldi’s stance on ensuring quality alongside affordability. While other retailers also offer price-matched products, the focus remains on providing transparency and value to customers. The email from Aldi’s CEO aims to reassure customers of the brand’s integrity and commitment to maintaining high standards in the wake of the Panorama revelations.
