The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has brought fresh hope for the £300 Winter Fuel Payment change, urging people to take action to secure their money. Age UK has continued its campaign to reverse the decision that limits the payment to those on specific means-tested benefits, excluding many pensioners.
The charity has mobilised individuals to write to MPs and sign petitions, advocating for the payment to remain available to all pensioners. Despite recent parliamentary efforts to overturn the plan, it remains in place. Eorann, from Age UK Campaigns, emphasised that the fight is ongoing and encouraged more engagement to influence government decisions.
Traditionally, the Winter Fuel Payment, introduced in 1997, supported all individuals over State Pension age with tax-free amounts of £100 to £300. The government asserts that the poorest pensioners will still receive the payment through Pension Credit eligibility. However, Age UK’s Caroline Abrahams highlighted concerns that many vulnerable pensioners may miss out due to the means-testing criteria.
Abrahams stressed the significant impact on low-income pensioners, particularly those over 80 and disabled individuals. She called for additional measures in the upcoming Budget to safeguard those at risk. Age UK stands ready to collaborate with the government to develop effective solutions to support struggling pensioners.
As the debate continues, Age UK urges individuals to contact their MPs to advocate for a reconsideration of the Winter Fuel Payment policy. The campaign aims to bring attention to the challenges faced by millions of pensioners and ensure that vital support is provided during the colder months.
