Plans have been approved for a children’s care home in Ynysybwl by Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) despite opposition, as reported by Wales Online. The residential care home for up to four children at The Bield in New Road was given the green light by RCT’s planning committee on September 26.
Councillor Scott Emanuel praised the application, describing it as the “absolute gold standard” for cared-for children. The proposal stated that children aged between 0 and under 19 years, under the guardianship of Athena Care Group, would live at the home for reasons such as emotional wellbeing concerns and learning disabilities, aiming for long-term residency and eventual independence.
South Wales Police expressed concerns about potential risks to children at the premises but the planning report countered with arguments of a sustainable location with good access to services and an impact on the character of the area. Despite objections from locals citing disruptive behaviour, antisocial concerns, and infrastructure issues, planning officers recommended approval based on the site’s residential nature and minimal alterations.
Councillors supporting the plans highlighted the importance of providing a safe and nurturing environment for vulnerable children. Councillor Danny Grehan emphasised the opportunity for children to find happiness and spend time outdoors, while Councillor Jill Bonetto commended the setup as a positive addition, urging a shift in perspective towards understanding the crucial need for such facilities.
While concerns persist from some quarters, the approved plans for the children’s care home aim to offer a supportive environment for children in need, reflecting a balance between community concerns and the welfare of vulnerable children in the area.
