A woman was left ‘kicking and screaming’ to save her beloved pet from a brutal dog attack, which resulted in her pet being covered in blood. Skye, an 11-year-old Border Collie, was attacked by another dog in a Cardiff street. The owner, Sue Smith, recounted how without the intervention of a passer-by, she believes her dog would not have survived.
The incident occurred as Mrs. Smith was walking Skye at around 2.30 pm on a Friday afternoon in Cardiff. Taking an alternate route to avoid broken glass in a subway, Mrs. Smith found herself on Bryn Celyn heading towards Llanishen reservoir. A French Bulldog-style dog approached without a collar, followed by a Staffy-type dog that suddenly attacked Skye, grabbing and rolling her over.
Mrs. Smith described her efforts to save Skye, resorting to kicking and screaming as the attacking dog refused to let go. A kind passer-by stepped in to help, prising the jaws of the aggressive dog away from Skye. Thanks to their intervention, Skye’s life was saved, and the pair were transported to the vet immediately, where Skye underwent surgery.
After the attack, Skye was found with multiple tears, skin damage, and puncture wounds, necessitating shoulder surgery and the placement of drains in her wounds. Despite the trauma, Skye did not suffer any broken bones and is recovering under veterinary care. Mrs. Smith expressed her devastation over the incident, highlighting Skye’s gentle nature and the potential danger posed by such attacks.
The cost of Skye’s treatment has been covered by insurance, and Mrs. Smith has reported the incident to the authorities. She emphasized the impact of the attack on Skye’s well-being, expressing concern that it may affect the dog’s future interactions due to the traumatic experience. Mrs. Smith urged for awareness of the seriousness of such incidents, noting that the consequences could have been even more severe.
As Skye continues her recovery journey, Mrs. Smith remains grateful for the assistance provided by the passer-by and the veterinary team. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the potential dangers that can arise unexpectedly.
