A nurse’s holiday took a distressing turn in 2013 when she experienced severe stomach pains, leading to a diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. Upon her return to the UK, her gallbladder was removed. However, her health issues continued as further tests revealed cancerous cysts on her pancreas. Aware of the grim survival rates of pancreatic cancer, Dawn Clayton, a nurse manager, faced a challenging journey ahead.
Survival rates for pancreatic cancer are alarmingly low, with over half of patients dying within three months and only seven per cent surviving past five years. In the UK, 80% of cases are diagnosed too late for life-saving treatment. Dawn’s early diagnosis allowed her to undergo surgery, followed by intense chemotherapy. Despite a period of good health, she faced a relapse in 2021, necessitating the removal of her pancreas and spleen.
Undeterred by her health challenges, Dawn, aged 60, embarked on two Alps treks to raise funds for pancreatic cancer charities. Facing obstacles such as altitude and health management, Dawn persevered, even amidst an episode of atrial fibrillation during one trek. Determined to complete the journey, Dawn sought medical care and adjusted her route. With her husband’s support, she finished the trek, highlighting her resilience and determination.
Reflecting on her journey since diagnosis, Dawn emphasised the importance of positivity and support. Her experience taught her that limits can be surpassed with determination and a positive mindset.
