A hospital worker has been sentenced at Swansea Crown Court after a Snapchat message distraction caused her to hit a pedestrian, resulting in serious injuries. The incident involving driver Ameilia Jeffrey happened on Llangyfelach Road in Swansea, where pedestrian Helal Ahmed was struck while crossing the road.
Jeffrey’s phone records showed she had been using Snapchat whilst driving, leading to a total of 19 incoming and outgoing messages in the nine minutes before the collision. Mr. Ahmed, a father-of-five, suffered life-changing injuries including brain trauma and multiple fractures. He spoke of his struggles to regain normalcy in daily activities post-accident.
Witnessed by a police officer, Mr. Ahmed was thrown into the air upon impact, leading to severe injuries. He underwent surgery and endured a significant recovery process. Jeffrey cooperated at the scene, and subsequent tests showed no alcohol or drug influence. Mr. Ahmed expressed forgiveness but hoped for more cautious driving from Jeffrey.
In court, Jeffrey, aged 22, received a suspended 22-month prison sentence, with additional community service and driving disqualification. She expressed remorse and a desire to apologise publicly to Mr. Ahmed, acknowledging the consequences of her actions. Mr. Ahmed continues to suffer from his injuries, impacting his daily life and activities, with ongoing medical appointments and challenges.
