A TUI couple, Cordelia and Ian, are among the “hundreds” of holidaymakers who have fallen seriously ill during their stays at luxury hotels in Cape Verde, as reported by Wales Online. Over 926 people have come forward in the last three years, claiming to have suffered from gastric illnesses while visiting the island, turning their dream trips into “holidays from hell”. Complaints include falling ill with illnesses such as Shigella and Salmonella at various five-star hotels.
Cordelia Plummer and Ian Waller, a newlywed couple from Birmingham and Kingston-Upon-Hull respectively, stayed at the Riu Cabo Verde hotel in Sal, Cape Verde. They were struck with severe gastric symptoms during their two-week all-inclusive break, with Cordelia requiring medical attention upon their return to the UK. Despite paying almost £3,000 for their holiday through TUI, their experience turned out to be far from what they expected.
Specialist lawyer Jatinder Paul from Irwin Mitchell, representing the affected holidaymakers, expressed deep concern over the increasing number of cases. He highlighted the potential long-term health risks associated with such illnesses and emphasised the need to address the underlying causes to prevent future occurrences.
Cordelia and Ian’s ordeal involved severe illness, with both experiencing ongoing symptoms even upon returning home. They raised concerns about the quality of food served at the hotel, citing observations of uncovered dishes, lukewarm food, and the presence of cockroaches in the restaurant. The couple, along with other guests with similar symptoms, were shocked to discover negative reviews online detailing comparable experiences.
The couple, alongside ten other holidaymakers from the Riu Cabo Verde, have sought legal advice from Irwin Mitchell, adding to the growing number of complaints regarding illness at Cape Verde hotels. Despite numerous reports over the past few years, tour operator TUI has not yet responded to comment on the situation, leaving many questions unanswered.
The wave of holidaymakers falling ill highlights the urgency for thorough investigations into hotel practices and food safety standards. The increasing number of cases and ongoing health concerns underscore the need for immediate action to prevent similar incidents in the future.
