A man’s encounter with a shark has led to an unusual decision – he is getting the teeth left embedded in his arm turned into jewellery. Angus Kockott, 20, was snorkelling in the shallow waters off the island of Mangareva, French Polynesia, when a 2.5m grey reef shark suddenly attacked him. In a quick response, Angus used a blade he had on him to stab the shark in the gills before swimming to safety. He underwent a six-hour surgery to repair the severe damage caused by the shark’s teeth, which severed nerves and tendons in his arm.
Despite the traumatic experience, Angus remains undeterred and is eager to return to the ocean. He described the incident as a “defining experience” in his life and is even having earrings made from the teeth extracted from his arm. Reflecting on the attack, Angus shared, “When the shark bit, I didn’t have time to panic – you just have to act when you have that kind of adrenaline in those situations.” He expressed gratitude for having had the presence of mind to defend himself.
After the attack, Angus received medical treatment, including skin and nerve grafts, to aid his recovery. The incident left him with limited movement and feeling in his arm, but he remains optimistic about his future in the water. Describing the attack as a pivotal moment in his life, Angus emphasised his eagerness to resume his training for a career in sailing.
The harrowing experience occurred while Angus was sailing with a friend around the Gambier Islands in French Polynesia. Following the attack, he was promptly taken to a hospital for extensive medical care. His recovery process involved multiple surgeries and graft procedures to restore function to his arm. Despite the challenges he has faced, Angus maintains a positive outlook and is determined to continue pursuing his passion for sailing.
