Cyclist thought she was dying as crash left her with 24 broken bones

A cyclist who suffered 24 fractures and severe injuries in a collision with another rider in central London has shared her harrowing experience and remarkable road to recovery. Virginia Stuart-Taylor, 35, was cycling to work along Chelsea Embankment on October 3, 2023, when the accident left her with lacerations to her liver and spleen, collapsed lungs, and internal bleeding. She described the terrifying moments of being unable to move, thinking she was dying and having an out-of-body experience.

Virginia received life-saving treatment at the scene from London’s Air Ambulance Charity’s advanced trauma team before being taken to King’s College Hospital, where she spent 25 days. Despite facing immense pain and challenges, Virginia has made a miraculous recovery through physiotherapy and exercise. She is now preparing to run in this year’s Royal Parks Half Marathon, a race she couldn’t participate in last year due to the collision.

Reflecting on her journey, Virginia emphasised the importance of having a strong support system and maintaining optimism. She also expressed gratitude for the charity that saved her life, noting her desire to give back to help save more lives in the future. Virginia has set a fundraising target for the London’s Air Ambulance Charity and is determined to complete the upcoming half marathon to support the organisation.

Following the collision, Virginia spent time in intensive care and underwent extensive treatment to address her numerous injuries. She recalled the emotional experience of meeting the doctors who played a crucial role in her recovery and expressed her gratitude for the second chance at life she has been given. While she has decided not to cycle in central London anymore, Virginia remains determined to make the most of her recovered life, including participating in races and supporting the charity that made her recovery possible.

Virginia’s story serves as a testament to resilience and the importance of life-saving services like air ambulance charities. Her commitment to fundraising and continuing her active lifestyle despite the challenges she has faced exemplifies a remarkable journey of overcoming adversity and embracing a new perspective on life.
