Asda supermarket customers in the UK now have the opportunity to purchase £9 worth of food for just £3.30 through a new initiative with the food waste platform Too Good To Go. This partnership has been rolled out to 1000 Asda sites across the country.
Using the free Too Good To Go app, customers can order a ‘Surprise Bag’ filled with grocery items that are nearing their use-by date but are still perfectly edible. This initiative aims to reduce food waste by offering these products at a fraction of their full price.
The contents of the Surprise Bags are random and could include a variety of items such as prepared fruit, chilled products, ready meals, bakery items, and produce like dairy, meat, fish, or poultry. Additionally, other businesses in Asda stores, including LEON, Greggs, Sbarro, and Subway, are also participating in this scheme, offering customers the chance to purchase surplus stock at discounted prices.
Asda’s Vice President for Commercial Strategy, Operations & Own Brand, Sam Dickson, expressed delight in expanding the partnership with Too Good To Go, emphasising the supermarket’s commitment to reducing food waste. Sophie Trueman, Country Director at Too Good To Go UK and Ireland, highlighted the benefits of saving food from being thrown away, describing it as a positive outcome for businesses, consumers, and the environment.
Customers can locate nearby participating Asda supermarkets or Asda Express stores through the Too Good To Go app to collect their Surprise Bags. Prices for the bags vary depending on the location, with Asda Supermarkets offering bags for £3.30 containing goods worth £9, and other businesses determining pricing based on contents.
The initiative aims to not only provide customers with affordable food options but also contribute towards minimising food waste and supporting sustainability efforts. As more consumers embrace this opportunity, it marks a significant step towards a more sustainable approach to shopping and reducing food waste in the UK.
