A family-of-four in the UK has managed to slash their electricity bill to just £16 per month, as the energy price cap rises across the country. The £149 increase set by energy regulator Ofgem applies to standard credit, direct debit, prepayment meters, or Economy 7 meters, but James Smith, 37, his wife, and two children have significantly reduced their bill throughout the summer.
James, a finance director from London, explained that with the increasing cost of living, affording monthly bills was a genuine concern for their family. Switching to renewable energy, particularly solar power, has alleviated their worries. The family invested £6,000 in installing solar panels on their home in August 2022, paid in monthly instalments, which they’ve offset with their energy savings.
They claim to have saved 10,000 kilowatts of energy, equivalent to powering 100,000 100-watt light bulbs, and have enough stored energy to make over 100,000 cups of tea or run an air fryer for 6,666 hours. Despite reservations about the appearance of solar panels, James believes they enhance the look of his home.
James estimates that without solar energy, their winter electricity bill could be around £300 per month. He encourages other families to consider investing in renewable energy sources, emphasising the financial benefits and the positive environmental impact. Going solar is seen as a long-term investment that not only reduces costs but also adds value to the home.
As energy prices continue to rise, James advocates for solar power as a way for individuals to regain control over their energy bills and contribute positively to the environment.
