Welsh Hotel Announces Sudden Threat of Closure – Wales Online
The owners of Afan Lodge in Port Talbot have proposed to close the hotel, which has been operating at a loss. The picturesque 15-bedroom hotel in the Afan Valley also houses an on-site bar and restaurant, popular for its Sunday lunch offerings. Originally a Miners’ Institute, it was transformed into Afan Lodge Hotel in 2009, primarily attracting bike enthusiasts.
Afan Lodge was acquired by the Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm Community Fund CIC (PyC CIC) in 2019 to rescue the struggling business. However, ongoing challenges, exacerbated by the Covid pandemic, have hindered the lodge’s financial performance. The PyC CIC, established in collaboration with Vattenfall to support communities impacted by the wind farm development, has invested £1.5 million into the venue.
Despite efforts to sell the hotel over the past six months, the lodge faces potential closure, jeopardising the jobs of 30 staff members. A 30-day consultation period has commenced with employees, ensuring they receive necessary support and assistance during this uncertain time. Visitors with existing bookings will be accommodated until the proposed closure on November 4.
The community’s response on social media has been significant, with over 200 comments expressing dismay over the potential closure. Many shared fond memories of their experiences at Afan Lodge, hoping for a successful intervention to save the establishment. As the PyC CIC actively seeks a buyer, discussions with stakeholders continue to explore all available options.
