Amazon to create hundred of Christmas jobs in Swansea

Amazon is set to open up hundreds of seasonal roles in Swansea for the Christmas period. The e-commerce giant will be recruiting for over 15,000 seasonal positions across the UK, with a minimum pay rate of £13.50 per hour in Swansea, rising to £14.50 depending on the location. While the exact number of seasonal jobs in Wales wasn’t disclosed by Amazon, it is anticipated to be around 500, similar to last year.

Amazon has made a significant investment of £550 million in increased pay for its operations employees in the UK since 2022, resulting in a 35% rise in the hourly rate within two years. The company’s UK operations director, Anil Verma, stated that they are thrilled to offer more than 15,000 positions this year, and seasonal workers play a vital role in delivering an exceptional customer experience.

In Swansea, Amazon currently employs 1,400 staff, with an additional 600 positions at delivery stations in Newport, Port Talbot, and Deeside. As one of the largest private sector employers in the UK, Amazon has a workforce of 75,000. Last month, the company announced a 9.8% increase in the starting pay for frontline operation workers, raising the starting wage to £28,080 a year in Wales.

John Boumphrey, Amazon’s UK country manager, emphasised the significance of frontline employees in the company’s success, leading to the decision to boost the minimum starting pay to over £28,000 annually for all frontline employees.
