An advisory group of eight experts has been appointed to tackle the overwhelming NHS waiting lists in Wales, with a specific focus on improving healthcare services in the region. The group, commissioned by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Jeremy Miles, will conduct an independent review of existing arrangements supporting enhancements in NHS Wales.
Miles emphasised that the group will operate independently of NHS Wales and will offer external assurance on the effectiveness of current measures to enhance performance and productivity across the healthcare system. The group’s mandate includes addressing waiting times, planned care, cancer performance, and emergency and urgent care improvements.
The advisory group is comprised of esteemed professionals from diverse healthcare backgrounds. Sir David Sloman, with 40 years of healthcare management experience, will chair the group. Other members include Professor Tim Briggs, Professor Sally Lewis, Professor Marcus Longley, Adam Roberts, Ed Rose, Dr Tara Sood, and Sir Paul Williams, each bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table.
The group is set to convene for the first time this month and aims to deliver its recommendations to the Health Secretary by March 31, 2025. Their thorough review and recommendations are expected to play a crucial role in enhancing healthcare services, reducing waiting times, and improving overall patient care in Wales.
