Nutrition expert Professor Tim Spector is advocating for Brits to incorporate a specific protein-packed superfood into their diets. Tim, the founder of Zoe Health, revealed that adding this little-known food could enhance your fibre intake and potentially reduce the risk of diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and multiple cancers. The superfood in question is tempeh, a plant-based protein similar to tofu but made from whole soybeans, providing more protein and fibre than tofu. Tempeh’s distinct nuttier flavour and denser texture set it apart from tofu, offering about 21 grams of protein per serving, equivalent to a chicken breast.
In a video shared on his Instagram account, Tim emphasised the benefits of including tempeh in your diet, not just for its protein content but also for its fibre, which is essential for a healthy digestive system. He highlighted that many people in the US and UK are not meeting the recommended daily fibre intake, with potential consequences on gut health and overall well-being. Studies have linked higher fibre consumption to a reduced likelihood of developing various serious conditions such as diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and certain cancers.
To support a well-rounded diet, Tim suggested additional sources of protein and fibre, including green lentils, kidney beans, black beans, bulgur wheat, and peas. These foods offer a combination of protein and fibre that can contribute to overall health. By diversifying food choices to include such nutrient-rich options, individuals can improve their dietary balance and support their gut health. Embracing a diet rich in fibre and protein can potentially lead to better long-term health outcomes and disease prevention.
In light of the growing body of evidence backing the health benefits of adequate fibre intake, Tim’s recommendations underscore the importance of considering the nutritional profile of foods beyond just protein content. As more people become aware of the significance of fibre in maintaining a healthy gut microbiome and reducing the risk of chronic illnesses, incorporating fibre-rich foods like tempeh and other legumes into regular meals could be a simple yet impactful step towards better health.
