A serial shoplifter in Wales has been sentenced after a string of offences, including attacking his partner and spitting at police officers. Michael Williams, 31, of Belmont Street, Barry, was convicted of 25 counts of shoplifting, possession of a knife and cocaine, and other offences. The total value of items stolen amounted to almost £1,000. In court, details were revealed of his thefts from multiple stores in Barry, with some items taken for personal use, while others included household products and electronics. This was part of a series of crimes spanning from November 2023 to July 2024.
Williams’ criminal behaviour escalated with incidents of violence. He was found in possession of a knife during an off-duty PCSO intervention, and he spat at police officers during an arrest for public order offences. On another occasion, he bit his girlfriend’s nose and threw a shoe at her, leaving her visibly injured and frightened. His criminal history highlighted 27 previous convictions for various offences, demonstrating a pattern of theft and burglaries.
In his defence, Williams’ counsel spoke of his troubled childhood and addiction issues. Despite this, the judge noted the delays in the criminal justice system that allowed Williams to continue offending. The judge emphasised the need for a custodial sentence to address his crimes and protect society. Williams was handed 20 months in prison, with half to be served in custody. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge upon release.
