A new Covid variant is causing concern among health experts as it leads to severe symptoms unlike those previously seen. Dr. Helen Wall, Clinical Director of Population Health in Greater Manchester, has highlighted the distressing signs associated with the new XEC Covid strain. Reports from the Manchester Evening News indicate that this variant, known as a recombinant variant, is on the rise and expected to become the most dominant strain.
XEC is formed when two existing strains combine, specifically derived from the KP. 3.3 and KS.1.1 strains with genetic ties to the omicron variant. Dr. Wall notes that XEC presents with symptoms that are more flu-like, such as high temperature, cough, body aches, and headache. She emphasises that while respiratory infections typically increase at this time of year, distinguishing between Covid and flu symptoms can be challenging.
Testing for Covid has declined significantly post widespread testing drives, contributing to the difficulty in accurately tracking the spread of the new variant. Dr. Wall highlights the importance of vaccination in combating the ‘tripledemic’ of winter illnesses, urging the public to take advantage of available vaccines, including the new respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine.
Addressing concerns about vaccine side effects, Dr. Wall reminds the public of the long-term benefits vaccines offer in preventing severe illness. Despite challenges such as vaccine fatigue and cost, she stresses the importance of getting vaccinated to protect oneself and others, particularly vulnerable individuals.
As the new variant poses unique challenges, Dr. Wall advises individuals with flu-like symptoms to monitor their health closely and avoid contact with vulnerable individuals.
