New Covid symptoms have emerged as a GP has warned that the virus is ‘wiping people out’, amidst a significant surge in cases. According to UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) data, there has been a 31.5% increase in Covid cases week-on-week. The XEC variant of Covid, a recombinant variant formed by the combination of existing strains, is rapidly becoming dominant globally, similar to the omicron variant identified in 2021 for its high contagion levels.
Dr. Helen Wall, a GP and clinical director of population health in Greater Manchester, highlighted that the symptoms caused by the new XEC variant are more flu-like compared to earlier variants, leading to more severe effects on individuals. She noted that the rise in respiratory infections due to the new variant is concerning, as it spreads swiftly to various countries. Dr. Wall emphasised that differentiating Covid symptoms from other common illnesses prevalent during this time can be challenging.
Amidst these developments, health authorities are urging the public to get vaccinated against the escalating threat of the XEC variant and other winter illnesses. The NHS is rolling out a triple vaccination campaign targeting Covid, flu, and the new respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Dr. Wall underscored the importance of vaccination as a preventive measure against severe illness and hospitalisation.
Appointments for vaccinations are now open for eligible groups, including older individuals, care home residents, and those with underlying health conditions. Concerns have been raised about the decline in flu vaccination uptake in recent years, despite the serious health implications of flu-related illnesses. Health officials emphasised the importance of getting vaccinated to protect vulnerable individuals and mitigate the risks of a ‘tripledemic’ of winter viruses – Covid, flu, and RSV.
