Toddlers are exposed to alarming levels of microplastics from carpets, warn scientists in a recent study conducted by Birmingham University. The research revealed that more than 60% of microplastic particles found in samples from homes and workplaces were ‘fibres’ likely originating from carpets, textiles, and household fabrics. The study highlighted a concerning fact that toddlers inhale more microplastics from indoor air than adults, putting their still-developing immune and nervous systems at risk. The study’s experts stressed the higher concentration of microplastics in homes compared to workplaces, primarily due to carpeted floors.
