Royal Mail is set to create thousands of temporary jobs for the festive season, with delivery and collection roles available in local offices across the UK. The company plans to hire 16,000 temporary workers in two parcel hubs, five seasonal parcel sort centres, and 37 mail centres nationwide, offering various shifts.
The parcel hubs in Daventry and Warrington are expected to employ over 2,000 additional staff to handle an estimated 1.7 million parcels processed daily. To accommodate the seasonal demand, extra temporary space equivalent to 20 football pitches has been established in the sort centres situated in Atherstone, Milton Keynes, Northampton, Daventry, and Greenford.
The recruited staff will assist in sorting the surge of online shopping orders before distributing them to Royal Mail’s 1,200 delivery offices. Contracts will be active from late October to early January 2025, encompassing peak shopping events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Parcelforce Worldwide is also seeking additional drivers and indoor workers to support the increased workload.
In preparation for the Christmas rush, Royal Mail will introduce nearly 4,000 new vans, trucks, and trailers to its fleet. Alistair Cochrane, the company’s chief operating officer, highlighted the dedication to ensuring a seamless delivery experience during the busiest time of the year. He emphasised the commitment to providing top-notch service for consumers and businesses, acknowledging the significant investment in additional resources and temporary staff for efficient handling of the festive mail and online shopping market.
The company’s proactive approach aims to maintain high service standards and customer satisfaction throughout the holiday period. Royal Mail’s initiative reflects a strategic response to the escalating demands of seasonal shopping and parcel deliveries, reinforcing its position as a reliable postal service provider.
