NASA images show Sahara desert turning green and scientists aren’t sure exactly why

NASA satellite images have revealed an unexpected transformation in the Sahara Desert, the world’s largest hot desert known for its barren landscapes. Surprisingly, patches of greenery have started to appear across the desert regions in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. This change is attributed to an extratropical cyclone that struck northwestern Africa on September 7 and 8, bringing torrential rains – a rare occurrence in an area that typically receives less than eight centimetres of rainfall annually.

The heavy downpour has resulted in the growth of shrubs and trees in previously arid areas such as riverbeds. This phenomenon is not unprecedented; scientists have identified over 230 instances of greening in the Sahara over the past eight million years, occurring approximately every 21,000 years. These greening periods are linked to the earth’s tilt changes, which bring the Northern Hemisphere closer to the sun during summers, creating low pressure systems that draw moisture from the Atlantic into the desert.

While the recent rainfall primarily affected sparsely populated regions, its impact has been devastating, with floods claiming over a thousand lives and affecting four million people across 14 African nations. The deluge has caused infrastructural damage, including road disruptions and electricity and water supply issues. Scientists have observed how plant life in northwestern Africa quickly responds to heavy rain, temporarily transforming arid landscapes into lush environments.

Unlike the usual heavy rains in equatorial regions, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, the recent downpours extended to the Sahara. Scientists are intrigued by the abnormal northward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), where winds from the Southern and Northern Hemispheres converge, leading to persistent clouds, rain, and thunderstorms. This shift could be attributed to warmer North Atlantic Ocean temperatures, intensifying the temperature difference between the hemispheres and potentially influencing global warming patterns.

The most significant increase in greenery has been observed in north-central Africa, while southern regions like Guinea, Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon have experienced reduced greenery due to lower-than-usual rainfall. The Sahara’s greening trend has sparked interest and discussions among experts trying to comprehend the complex interplay of climatic factors causing this unique phenomenon in one of the world’s most renowned deserts.
