‘I went to the surgery for tests – hours later police were knocking at my door’

Andrew Moyens, a 52-year-old man from Wales, found himself facing a life-threatening situation after experiencing extreme fatigue. Despite leading a healthy lifestyle, he was puzzled by his constant tiredness, which began in December 2022. Andrew struggled to breathe, felt scared, and even had difficulty walking short distances. Visits to his GP and rounds of medication provided only partial relief, leading to a week off work where he felt too exhausted to participate in Christmas festivities.

Following persistent fatigue into the New Year, a different doctor ordered blood tests for Andrew. Unaware of the severity, Andrew returned home and was surprised when police officers arrived at his door that evening. The officers informed him that his blood results posed a danger to his life and escorted him to the hospital immediately. The tests revealed alarming levels of white blood cells and low red cell counts, indicating a critical condition.

Subsequent diagnosis confirmed Andrew had acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), a frightening revelation for the previously unaware patient. Commencing a three-month treatment plan involving chemotherapy, Andrew’s journey included a bone marrow transplant from his brother after achieving remission following setbacks like kidney failure. Despite a challenging recovery, Andrew emerged cancer-free by mid-summer, with ongoing monthly medical checks and a return to work.

Expressing gratitude for his medical care and family support, Andrew credited their love and encouragement for aiding his mental strength throughout his battle. Now an advocate for leukaemia awareness, Andrew aims to educate the public about the disease’s symptoms, emphasizing the importance of early detection through blood tests. Leukaemia UK and Leukaemia Care advocate for increased awareness and testing, with over 50,000 individuals living with the disease in the UK.

Reflecting on his transformative experience, Andrew highlighted the need for positivity and support during challenging times. Beyond his personal journey, he stresses the significance of understanding leukaemia symptoms for timely diagnosis and treatment. Andrew’s story serves as a reminder of the impact of awareness and support in overcoming life-threatening illnesses.

As Andrew continues his recovery and advocacy work, his story stands as a testament to the resilience and courage required to face life-altering health challenges. The importance of early detection, treatment, and support systems are key components in achieving positive health outcomes, exemplified by Andrew’s inspiring journey towards remission and healing.
